Arriving by Vehicle

Amelia Island is just a 45-minute drive from downtown Jacksonville, the nearest large city. Two bridges offer access to the island from the mainland: the George Crady Bridge connects to the southern tip of the island, while the Thomas J. Shave Jr. Bridge crosses over the Amelia River and connects the western side to the mainland.

Driving from Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Florida is the closest large city and driving from this area is convenient and quick during non-rush hours. From Jacksonville, you can take any route to I-95 N and drive approximately 20 miles and take Exit 373 for FL-200/FL-A1A toward Callahan/Fernandina Beach. You then drive east about 12 miles crossing the Thomas J. Shave Jr. Bridge and you’ll reach the island.

Driving from St. Augustine

From St. Augustine Florida you have two main options, both of which will take you about 90 minutes: taking I-95 N or US-1 N and then I-295 N. Generally, the fastest and most convenient option is to take I-95 N which goes almost straight to Amelia Island.

From downtown St. Augustine, you can drive north on Ponce De Leon Blvd. which will take you to FL-16 W. You turn left on FL-16 W and drive about 5 miles until you turn right to merge onto I-95 N. You then follow I-95 N for 30 miles and it will take you all the way to Exit 373. Follow the above-mentioned directions to get from Exit 373 to Amelia Island.

Arriving by Air

Amelia Island is just a 30-minute drive from Jacksonville International Airport. Flying to Jacksonville from many major cities is often relatively affordable. You can find great prices throughout the year for flights on a number of different airlines servicing the area including Jet Blue, Southwest, American Airlines, Silver Airways, Delta, United, US Airways and others.

Once you arrive at Jacksonville International Airport, you can choose to take a taxi, Uber, or rent a vehicle to get to Amelia Island. A number of transportation companies also offer flat rate service to and from Jacksonville International Airport. Once you get to Amelia Island, you do not need a vehicle to get around since it is fairly small, especially if you don’t mind walking and biking or using Segways.

Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport is also located directly on the island, and it is constructed to accommodate up to Gulfstream IV planes or smaller aircraft for private pilots and flights.
